Flat out on the tools. Short in the bank.

Wages, super, subbies and materials are due now; the client’s cash is 30 days out. One invoice sitting overdue is the difference between paying yourself and floating it on the card.

How trades compare: the ATO’s 2023-24 benchmarks

Every year the ATO publishes these ranges from small business tax returns. Each one is a cost as a share of annual turnover, so total expenses of $70,000 on $100,000 of turnover is 70%. Compare against the column for your turnover.

The ATO says a business outside its range may have room to improve, and that benchmarks are one of the tools it uses to identify businesses that may be avoiding their tax obligations.

An electrician turning over $300,000 with $210,000 of total expenses is at 70%, inside the 59% to 75% range for that turnover.

What if my business sits outside the range?

What does it cost?

It’s free to start, with no card. The paid plan is A$199 a month, or A$179 a month billed annually.
