Takings swing. The bills don’t.

Rent, the roster and the suppliers hit like clockwork while takings swing with the weather. One quiet fortnight and a surprise BAS can empty the till.

How cafés, restaurants and pubs compare: the ATO’s 2023-24 benchmarks

Every year the ATO publishes these ranges from small business tax returns. Each one is a cost as a share of annual turnover, so total expenses of $70,000 on $100,000 of turnover is 70%. Compare against the column for your turnover.

The ATO says a business outside its range may have room to improve, and that benchmarks are one of the tools it uses to identify businesses that may be avoiding their tax obligations.

A café turning over $400,000 that spends $150,000 on stock is at 37.5% cost of sales, inside the 35% to 41% range for that turnover.
